Sunrise Valley Center Curb Ramp Replacement Project

Sunrise Valley Center, owned by Tetra Partnerships, is located at 11529 Sunrise Valley Drive in Reston.  It has a bank, insurance agency, barbershop, drycleaner, jeweler, florist, and a large dental care center.

In February, 2008, RAC contacted Tetra by mail, concerning two curb ramps in the Center that were too steep to be used safely by customers using mobility devices.  We asked if they could be replaced with safely-sloped curb ramps per Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) specifications.

Marion Stillson, President of Reston Citizens Association (RCA), and Ken Fredgren, Chairman of RCA’s Reston Accessibility Committee, met with Elvin Capestany, Jr., Tetra’s property manager, at the Center in March, 2008.  After Ms. Stillson demonstrated how dangerous and exhausting it was for her to ascend the slope in her manual wheelchair, Mr. Capestany immediately understood the problem and embraced the idea of replacing the ramps.  The work was completed in June, 2008.
